I hated leaving Missy, and through the raging storm, I flew despite the torrential winds. Ryker had called me to his side, and although I had not told Missy the words he had used, it had less to do with the storm and more to do with the devastating panic that the Shadow attack had instilled upon the populace that required my attention.

She had been relatively secluded in the aftermath of the latest attack, mostly by my design, but the town was in utter chaos. I had done my best to shield her from the effects of what was unfolding, but it was only a matter of time before her entire coven was exposed, and Melissa herself was aware of the situation.

Now, with the storm, people were mistaking an act of nature for yet another attack, and Ryker was having a hard time containing peace.

I loathed that I was forced to deal with their panic. I’d learned from a young age that losing it was not beneficial to anyone. Clear heads prevailed. Fueling the fire with apprehension was not going to help anything.

Unfortunately, now the humans were also aware of what was happening, if not on the same level as the rest of us. The attack downtown had been brazen and public enough that they had seen, and the vampires had not done a good enough job finding the witnesses to glamorize them all. There were still humans wandering about, telling others what they had seen, and we had to put an end to that at least.

My wings fought against the whipping winds, hitting the tough membrane. Despite their translucence, my wings were sturdier than they looked.

It was difficult to see the town through the unsettling weather, but that didn’t stop me from engaging my inner GPS to navigate my way through Ashpoint and locate the Alpha in the pack house, where he had regrouped with Molly and his daughter.

Rose screamed, her little face red and defiant. Being a hybrid witch and shifter, she was sensitive to the atmosphere around us. Her emotions were all over the place between the storm, the crowd, and loud voices. Ryker took to the podium and yelled at everyone to shut up as I arrived, morphing back into my human flesh. I located a pair of pants and baggy sweater from one of the lockers and set to work helping Ryker maintain some semblance of order among the pack.

The place smelled stale and musky. I couldn’t remember the last time we had grouped there, the house mostly unused in the past years. Once upon a time, we had utilized it for covertness, but as the pack grew more powerful, secrecy became obsolete, and the house itself was more of a clubhouse to play poker than a building to host meetings.

Now, it was filled to capacity, bodies spilling out into the rain as Ryker struggled to get a hold on the din.

“Would you all just shut up!” the Alpha yelled again, glowering at the beings who crammed among us.
